How It Seems to Me

By Ursula K. Le Guin

Last night, I had an unexpected date with fireflies. The schedule to arrive was 6:30pm at the end of “tenth road”. I got there looking for human beings but quickly the fireflies emerged in the burgeoning darkness, flickering in its own right. A young woman parked her motorbike and also looked towards the glimmering light. I hesitated to ask her about “the meeting”, it didn’t seem to matter no more but a part of me was still waiting for the humans so I succumbed. The young woman told me she knew nothing of the meeting but led me towards a gate…life shimmering in a rhythmical pulse, it looked like a fairytale land. We walked deeper into the darkness, mesmerized by the surrounding stillness juxtaposed against nature’s sparkle. She moved here 6 months ago and this was the brightest night it has been this year. We were mesmerized by the light that emerged in the vast abyss before and after time, our souls commingling with the mist, trees, and river. I savored my first date with the fireflies and this young woman. My first morning was miraculous, and my first night was transcendental.
